(A Teaching Tool)

Welcome to Rodgers & Associates!
As a new intern, you are entering a training phase to prepare you for workplace writing expectations. This internship, part of your university education, will provide you with basic business and technical writing terminology and concepts. You will practice writing basic business document types and receive feedback on your writing. Your attitude, enthusiasm, and participation will influence your success during this semester-long internship. Your resources include your textbooks, a variety of online resources, and Dr. I.L. Rodgers, President of R&A [course instructor] who will provide official evaluations.
Rodgers & Associates hires technical communication experts, associates, to supply R&A clients with technical communication solutions. These solutions may be print-based such as letters, instructions, or reports, or they may be electronic such as Web pages and presentations. As interns, you will produce such documents as if you were an associate, but rather than send the documents directly to the clients, you will send them to Dr. Rodgers for evaluation and feedback. The projects to which you will be assigned will provide you with practice in determining form and content based on context, audience, and purpose.
As an intern, you want the most out of this experience, so you should ask questions and learn as much as possible during this semester. You may consider Rodgers as your mentor. She is available via telephone, Yahoo Messenger Chat, and asynchronously in your weekly online discussions. Please note that her availability is not 24/7, so make a note of her office hours and contact information in your course syllabus. Those are the days and times when she will be available for real-time contact. She is available during other times, but she does not guarantee availability at other times. You are strongly encouraged to attempt contact whenever you have a question; her goal is to help you succeed.
Please note that Rodgers & Associates and your internship is a practical exercise inspired by Michaels & Associates. Please visit the M&A Web site: http://www.docntrain.com/home.php During your review of the M&A site, notice the level of quality, the variety of document solutions, the application of key course concepts found in your textbook, and the commitment to clients. These are goals you will strive to meet during your internship.
