CASE STUDY: New Market Savings & Loan, New Market, MN
CASE DETAILS: [Note that the merger of Elko and New Market, Minnesota are real. However, the companies and people people mentioned in this case are entirely fictional.]
New Market Savings & Loan has served the small town and surrounding communities for 50 years. JP Morgan Chase® [real organization] has taken over NMSL. The NMSL facility will become a Chase branch in six months, and the NMSL employees (including the manager, Fred Mackley, will continue to staff the branch. Fred and his assistant manager, Gloria Newgate, worry that some customers will close their accounts and change banks. Fred has been NMSL's manager for five years and has been in the banking business for fifteen years. Gloria was hired two years ago and has been in the banking business for eight years. Both have Master's degrees in finance. Fred and Gloria have two problems, one requiring a design solution and the other requiring a report solution.
The first problem requires a graphic design solution. Gloria has surveyed a selection of customers who have expressed dissatisfaction with the coming changes. She needs her data converted to a visual that will help convince Chase management to authorize the expense of whatever actions she and Fred decide to implement to convince customers to remain after the take over.
The second problem requires a report of at least three reasonable options for actions that Fred and Gloria can implement to keep the loyalty of the bank's customers following the take over. Gloria stated, "This is going to be tricky because some of the customers I talked to really hate Chase, and I cannot offend Chase management when I talk to them about solutions. Other customers just fear change, and those customers need assurance that the change will be good for them." Fred stated, "Gloria has been doing the digging on this issue. Her data might not reflect what is going on at other locations, but I think she has really pegged the concerns of our customers. We need to see a variety of solutions to help us keep our customers."
Teacher Options: For a visual design assignment, students can be given or invent survey data with which to generate an effective graphic. For editing assignments, students may be provided with a recommendation report. For writing assignments, students could do the research and write the recommendation report.
